Costa Rica (05.19.08): Update #1
It all officially started Saturday afternoon. Everyone arrived at DeSales University around 1pm to meet 23 new faces. After a quick lunch (including some delicious oranges) our time led to some fun icebreaker games. Once we pretty much knew everyone’s name, we headed out to the soccer field for our first official training session. Coach Dave led the women’s and men’s team through some fun and interesting drills, but everyone was enjoying being on the field. Three players from Push the Rock’s club team (Renny, Bryce, and Chris) joined us, which was a blast having them out there on the field. After the first training session ended, the team headed back for quick showers and ate some delicious pizza for dinner. Chico led the team with the first Team Time, which started with reciting John 15:1-17 together as a group. The night included more bonding time with some fun card games that had everyone laughing at the end of the night. The team went to bed early Saturday night to get up early the next morning for church.
Sunday started with the team heading over to Bethel Bible Fellowship Church where the church invited us up front and prayed for our trip. After the service we continued on to the Push The Rock office to get some quick breakfast and then continued on to Faith Church. Don Jorgenson introduced the team to the church and Faith Church also prayed over our trip. After the church service we went to the “Family Picnic” lunch with the Push The Rock Board and team members’ families. We ate great food and the Board prayed for us. It was a great opportunity to meet different families, but the ones who could not make it were missed. After the picnic one of the girl’s parents offered their house to the team to lounge for the day and watch multiple sporting events. It was another great bonding time with games and different activities, including cutting hair. It was also an opportunity for the team to escape the rain.
Sunday night included our second Team Time. Coach Dave blessed the team with his testimony, and Chico started the “Fruit of the Spirit” discussion with the team. Sunday night also included packing and preparing for our early departure Monday morning. Some decided to sleep before having to get up at 2 am, but others decided to stay up and keep themselves entertained until it was time to leave. The group that stayed up had a blast playing more card games and got very creative playing spoons and reinventing the game to chairs. Everyone was up and ready to go at 2:20 am and the vans were loaded and driving to the airport by 2:30 am. After a long day of traveling and a 2-hour time change, the team arrived in Costa Rica at 11:20 am (Costa Rica time).
After making it through customs and getting our passports stamped, we met up with the best bus driver, Don Guillermo, who took the team to the house where we will be staying for the next ten days. The afternoon included getting the house organized with the gear and a delicious lunch. The pastor of our partner church here ate lunch with us, which was a great opportunity to get to know him, especially while he tried teaching us Spanish and we tried teaching him English. The team had its second practice at a park down the road from the house and did some preparing for our first camps tomorrow morning. Currently, most of the team members are sitting in the room together getting ready for another delicious meal. Tonight’s schedule includes Team Time, praise and worship and a few fun games before we head to bed. Big day tomorrow!
Thank you in advance for praying for us!
